Handheld Devices

If my technology director gave me a  budget of $10,000 for the purchase of hand held devices in my library I would do the best I could to meet the needs of the students and teachers in my school.

The first thing I would purchase from my budget money would be 20 classic ipods.  These run around $250 dollars.  I would use them for check out from the library for the lower grades.  I would put books on them so the teachers could put them in their listening centers.  You cannot find books on cassettes any longer and it is hard for the students to us the books on cd's without scratching them.  I would ask the teachers for any books they had on cd that I could transfer to the ipods.  I would teach the teachers how to use them at the beginning of the school year and I would teach the students during their library time.

I would also like to purchase 10 ipads for the teachers to use and check out.  These run around $800 a piece for 64GB and 3-G wifi.  Keyboards are $69.00, Cases are $39.00 and docks are $29.00.  They will be used to do TPRI testing and other tasks the teachers need to use them for.  It will give them a hands on approach to showing students information one on one and at their desks. Hand held computers are the way of the future and it won't be long before all students have personal hand helds to us in the classroom and at home.
