Hazel Harvey Peace Lecture

I was really glad I was able to attend the Hazel Harvey Peace Lecture.  I loved the speaker!  Dr. Mardis was full of energy and really made me excited to become a Library Media Specialist.  I really liked how she went into detail about Melvil Dewey and John Dewey.  It gave me a better understand of why and how the library and Dewey system is the way it is!  I also loved her view of STEM and how we as librarians can have such a big role in math, science, and technology in schools.  I also liked how she said the library is a "place, not a space".  There is so much that can be done in the library if the right person is in charge and is full of energy to make the library a great space!

I was also glad I went so I could meet some of the professors and other students.  That is one of the draw backs of not meeting face to face is you don't build those relationships as easily.  I was given a lot of great information to help me throughout the length of my degree program.  I also enjoyed the ref-works.  Research is one of my week points and helped to have the information shown to me by people and not just an online chat!  I look forward to next year and hope that I can attend the lecture again.

What have I learned?

This class has really helped me understand and learn new technology that I was not aware of and have not used before.  I really liked being able to make a podcast!  Once I figured it out it was really simple to do!  I have also figured out from this class how much I really do love technology and I have such a strong desire to learn more and teach my kindergarten students more technology!  I feel so much more comfortable with exploring new things relating to technology because of this class!
I love technology and will do the best I can to keep up with the new and changing technology!  I will research and collaborate with other teachers and librarians to see what new and innovative technology is on the horizon!
I will continue to use my delicious account and the prezi's.  I've already told the librarian, technology teacher and gifted and talented teachers at my school about delicious and prezi's.  My daughter and a few other students are using a prezi in their GT class for a project instead of a power point.  I told her "Power Points are out!"  I will also continue to make podcasts for my students and parents to access on my school website.  I would also like to add more information for parents on my website.  I plan on continuing to be an advocate for the other teachers and students in my building by spreading the word about new technology I find!

I really enjoyed this class!  I feel I have learned a lot that I will be able to use in my future as a library media specialist!  Thank you for a great class!

I also learned I can survive 2 graduate classes, a full time job, being a lay leader at church and being a mom of 2 busy girls and wife!  If I can do this, I can do anything!!

        Organizing Books

I think that web 2.0 is good for librarians, I think that technology helps librarians and does not cause any problems for librarians.  People know how to do simple research and internet searches but still need librarians to help with specific searches and finding information on specific topics.  Library Media Specialists are still a wealth of information and are "specialists" for that very reason.

What are the implications of this trend for librarians?

This trend just means that librarians are going to have toe become more technological and be able to help students and library patrons advance as technology advances.  Librarians are no longer just shelving and running libraries.  They are responsible for so much more especially when it involves technology.

Also, for additional food for thought, go to your Delicious site and examine your list of tags. In your opinion, are these tags more or less helpful than traditional subject headings?

I think the delicious tags are more specific and allow you to break down information in an easier format.  Delicious tags are good for teachers because it allows you to narrow down the specific areas you are looking for. It also allows you to have flexibility on different computers and helps you keep your bookmarks organized.  I like that if I am looking for a specific math website in my delicious book marks it allows me to search other tags to see what other teachers are using.  It allows you to be more specific when searching tags.

"Web 2.0 ... The Machine is Us/Using Us."

When I watched this video it was amazing to see how much technology has changed and become such a part of our lives over the last 20 years.  We are all so dependent on technology.  The machine is definitely us, using us!  People do not know how to function without technology.  If you we do not have our cell phones or computers we feel lost!  I can remember not even having a cell phone or a computer.  Today I am completely and totally dependent on technology!  Dr. Welsch gave this title to the video because it is a true and accurate representation of our society today and how dependent we are on technology.  The machine definitely uses us!

        Handheld Devices

If my technology director gave me a  budget of $10,000 for the purchase of hand held devices in my library I would do the best I could to meet the needs of the students and teachers in my school.

The first thing I would purchase from my budget money would be 20 classic ipods.  These run around $250 dollars.  I would use them for check out from the library for the lower grades.  I would put books on them so the teachers could put them in their listening centers.  You cannot find books on cassettes any longer and it is hard for the students to us the books on cd's without scratching them.  I would ask the teachers for any books they had on cd that I could transfer to the ipods.  I would teach the teachers how to use them at the beginning of the school year and I would teach the students during their library time.

I would also like to purchase 10 ipads for the teachers to use and check out.  These run around $800 a piece for 64GB and 3-G wifi.  Keyboards are $69.00, Cases are $39.00 and docks are $29.00.  They will be used to do TPRI testing and other tasks the teachers need to use them for.  It will give them a hands on approach to showing students information one on one and at their desks. Hand held computers are the way of the future and it won't be long before all students have personal hand helds to us in the classroom and at home.

        Technology

I love technology and feel I am very good at using technology as a tool in my classroom.  I currently have an interactive white board that I use in my Kindergarten Classroom.  I teach my students how to use it and they use it as one of my literacy or math labs.  I also feel comfortable using most basic computers programs such as word and excel.  We have Macintosh computers at school so I have learned how to use a Mac and a PC.

I feel I am weak when it comes to some of the newer internet sites. I'm not familiar with blogging, podcasting or having my own website.  This is my first year to have a website for my class.  I hope to be able to maintain and update it as a tool for my parents to use.
