Hazel Harvey Peace Lecture

I was really glad I was able to attend the Hazel Harvey Peace Lecture.  I loved the speaker!  Dr. Mardis was full of energy and really made me excited to become a Library Media Specialist.  I really liked how she went into detail about Melvil Dewey and John Dewey.  It gave me a better understand of why and how the library and Dewey system is the way it is!  I also loved her view of STEM and how we as librarians can have such a big role in math, science, and technology in schools.  I also liked how she said the library is a "place, not a space".  There is so much that can be done in the library if the right person is in charge and is full of energy to make the library a great space!

I was also glad I went so I could meet some of the professors and other students.  That is one of the draw backs of not meeting face to face is you don't build those relationships as easily.  I was given a lot of great information to help me throughout the length of my degree program.  I also enjoyed the ref-works.  Research is one of my week points and helped to have the information shown to me by people and not just an online chat!  I look forward to next year and hope that I can attend the lecture again.

What have I learned?

This class has really helped me understand and learn new technology that I was not aware of and have not used before.  I really liked being able to make a podcast!  Once I figured it out it was really simple to do!  I have also figured out from this class how much I really do love technology and I have such a strong desire to learn more and teach my kindergarten students more technology!  I feel so much more comfortable with exploring new things relating to technology because of this class!
I love technology and will do the best I can to keep up with the new and changing technology!  I will research and collaborate with other teachers and librarians to see what new and innovative technology is on the horizon!
I will continue to use my delicious account and the prezi's.  I've already told the librarian, technology teacher and gifted and talented teachers at my school about delicious and prezi's.  My daughter and a few other students are using a prezi in their GT class for a project instead of a power point.  I told her "Power Points are out!"  I will also continue to make podcasts for my students and parents to access on my school website.  I would also like to add more information for parents on my website.  I plan on continuing to be an advocate for the other teachers and students in my building by spreading the word about new technology I find!

I really enjoyed this class!  I feel I have learned a lot that I will be able to use in my future as a library media specialist!  Thank you for a great class!

I also learned I can survive 2 graduate classes, a full time job, being a lay leader at church and being a mom of 2 busy girls and wife!  If I can do this, I can do anything!!
